How to find the perfect shoe factory ?

In the world of footwear, the journey from concept to product is a fascinating adventure. One crucial step in this process is finding the right shoe factory to bring your designs to life.

And I am not going to lie, it is not an easy task ! You may think you have found the perfect manufacturer, but they might have never replied to your emails, or just stopped answering ? It can be very frustrating, specially when you are feeling ready, you have a great project in hands, waiting to for the next step. So wether you're an emerging designer or an established brand looking to expand, here's a comprehensive guide on how to find the perfect shoe factory for your needs, and I hope that it will help you getting prepared to face this big step !

Manufacturer in factory

1. Define Your Requirements: Before embarking on your search, clearly define your production requirements. Consider factors such as production capacity, materials, and the types of shoes you plan to manufacture. This clarity will guide your search and help you find a factory that aligns with your specific needs.

2. Industry Networking: Attend trade shows (such as Lineapelle, MICAM, Premiere Vision etc..), conferences, and networking events within the footwear industry. These platforms provide excellent opportunities to connect with manufacturers, learn about their capabilities, and establish valuable contacts.

3. Online Directories: Utilize online directories and platforms that specialize in connecting designers with manufacturers. Websites like FindSourcing, MakersValley, or ThomasNet can serve as valuable resources to discover a wide range of shoe factories. But I would opt for a free and more personal approach, and find that LinkedIn is a great place to start.

4. Collaborate with Industry Associations: Reach out to footwear industry associations in your country, in the UK: BFA . These organizations often have extensive networks and can provide recommendations for reputable shoe factories.

5. Local Production vs. Overseas Manufacturing: Consider the pros and cons of local production versus overseas manufacturing. While local factories offer proximity for oversight and potentially faster turnaround times, overseas factories may provide cost advantages. Evaluate which option aligns best with your business goals.

6. Quality Assurance and Certifications: Prioritize factories that adhere to quality standards and possess relevant certifications. This ensures that your shoes meet industry benchmarks and align with ethical and sustainable practices, which can be a real asset later on the process of promoting your brand (B2C, Wholesale etc...).

7. Factory Visits: Whenever possible, plan visits to potential factories, it is my personal favorite thing to do. As it creates a stronger bond with your manufacturer and shows that you are interested in their craft. But also observing the production process firsthand allows you to assess the factory's capabilities, working conditions, and overall suitability for your brand.

8. Request Samples: Before committing to large-scale production, request samples from potential factories. It is a common thing in the process, but often people new to the field do not dare to ask for it. It is important to receive samples and rework them until you are happy with the result. Once the final sample made, request a PPS (Pre Production Sample) which will be made with the same materials and finishings of the product your clients will receive. This allows you to evaluate the quality of their work, attention to detail, and ability to meet your design specifications.

9. Negotiate Terms and Contracts: Once you've identified a suitable factory, negotiate terms and finalize contracts. Clearly outline production timelines, costs, and quality expectations to avoid misunderstandings later in the process.

Do not get frustrated by this section, it is easy to get though. For most factory you are just one more person in line asking from them to make dreams into reality. You might be the sweetest and most patient person ever, but not everyone they've met in the past are. And often they have had really bad experiences with previous startups and/or projects. You may have to agree with terms for the first collection that are not ideal for you, but bare in mind that you can renegotiate those for the next season, they just want to protect themselves from time wasters. It is just a matter of building mutual trust.

10. Build a Long-Term Relationship: View your collaboration with the chosen factory as a partnership. Building a long-term relationship fosters trust, enhances communication, and ensures smoother production processes for future collections.
